Pawnbroking dates back to the Roman Empire and as far back as ancient China, where imperials governed the regulations over 3000 years ago, similarly as we see today.

In the 20th century, Britain had almost the same number of pawnbrokers to public houses, lending money against items such as beds, linen, cutlery and so forth. The pawnbroking industry boomed in the 1980's and has continued to grow today. The recent upsurge in the industry's fortunes came during the 1980's credit boom and has continued today with customers now preferring this convenient form of borrowing.

Origin of the Pawnbroker Symbol

The pawnbroker symbol is believed to have originated from Italy in the 15th century. Legend has it that one member of the Medici family, working for Emperor Charles the Great, killed a giant with three sacks of rocks, which later became part of the family crest. The Medici family went on to become a dominant financial power, however, the family was split into two. half became bankers and the other half became pawnbrokers, taking half of the family crest which incorporated the three golden balls, as we know today the symbol of pawnbrokers.
